ABOUT THE NCLEX EXAM

Lets talk about the NCLEX or National Council Licensure Examination!

The test plan is revised every 3 years.

There is a minimum of 75 questions but there could be as many as 265 questions. The average number a student gets is 120 questions. But don't be surprised if you have fewer or many more questions than the average. Neither of these extremes means you have failed!

The NCLEX works by using Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). This is a tailored system that will pick the best test questions and adapt to your previous answers. The test completes when the computer decides with 95% accuracy that your ability is either above or below the set passing guideline. Sometimes it takes the program more or fewer questions to make this decision.

TAKING THE NCLEX EXAM

  • You have up to 6 hours to finish the test so pace yourself.
  • Most people finish in about 2.5 hrs.
  • You can take an optional break after you have completed 2 hours.
  • Most people finish in about 2.5 hrs.
  • While it's important to keep a steady pace, sometimes it's better to step away for a moment for the information in your brain to settle.
  • Remember to breathe!

MORE NCLEX FACTS

  • There are 15 unidentifiable test questions that will be thrown out and not counted against you.
  • You are not able to return to a previous question.
  • The computer won't let you move on without an answer to the current question.
